Safe Construction Exits – Smart Warning Systems for Safer Traffic

Construction site exits where cyclists and heavy vehicles intersect pose a safety risk. At Heidelberg Materials' facility on Johannesfredsvägen in Stockholm, a cycling path runs directly past the exit, meaning that trucks must cross it when leaving the site. To improve safety, a digital warning sign was tested, which automatically activated when a truck was about to exit, alerting cyclists.

The purpose was to evaluate how such a solution could enhance safety and influence cyclist behavior. The tests showed that cyclists became more aware and adjusted their speed, while drivers experienced a greater sense of security when exiting.

The tests focused on:

  • How cyclists were affected – did they slow down or stop more often?
  • Drivers’ experience – did stress levels decrease, and was awareness improved?
  • Technical functionality – how well did the system perform in a real traffic environment?

The results demonstrated that this technology has the potential to improve safety at more construction exits and contribute to a safer urban environment.

Who is is participating in the test?

CLOSER, Heidelberg Materials, M Logistics, Ramudden, and RISE.

With support from The City of Gothenburg, KTH, and the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).
