Purchase support is crucial for Sweden to continue to lead the development in the transition to electric trucks

Wednesday, November 2, 2022

Support for the purchase of electric trucks and charging infrastructure are the decisive means of control, according to experiences from the 45 major Swedish players who have joined together in one of Europe's most powerful ventures, the REEL project, to accelerate the transition to electric trucks. The supports exist, but they should be developed.

The conditions for the purchase subsidies should be long-term, predictable and the application process should be simplified and should be in line with support levels in other EU countries. In partnership, business and the public sector can together share the responsibility for a rapid transition, which strengthens Sweden's competitiveness and makes it possible to reach the climate goals and be a leading country.

The transportation system is facing the biggest change since the internal combustion engine was introduced. In order to reach Swedish climate goals, the changeover must proceed quickly. One of the most important parts is to bring about an electrification of the heavy trucks. A positive trend is that sales of electric trucks are increasing in Sweden, but from low levels. The reasons for increased sales are strong partnerships, more and better vehicle models, but also public support both for the purchase of vehicles and charging infrastructure. Swedish actors feel that there is uncertainty in how these supports will continue and in what form. In a recently released report from the project REEL, where more than 45 actors joined together to accelerate the transition to electric trucks in regional traffic, the argument is supported that the two most important instruments for the electrification of regional road freight transport are purchase subsidies for electric trucks and non-public charging infrastructure at hauliers depots, logistics terminals and other goods receiving points.

The two instruments of control should be the basis for the long-term efforts required to bring about the system change, this is what other progressive EU countries have chosen to do in order to increase the pace of change. In order to preserve our advanced position in the transition, current support needs to be maintained and developed so that the business community, together with the public sector, can show that Sweden is a leading country. This creates advantages for Swedish logistics operators and the automotive industry, both from a climate and competition perspective...

REEL is a national initiative where leading Swedish actors have joined forces to accelerate the transition to electrified, emission-free heavy transport on our roads. Within the venture, we establish, run and evaluate around 60 different regional logistics flows in varying types of driving assignments. REEL brings together transport buyers, forwarders and distributors, haulage companies, terminal operators, charging point operators, electricity grid companies and suppliers of trucks, charging equipment and management systems. In addition, regions, national authorities and universities participate in this initiative.
