The role of smart traffic zones in urban planning
By leveraging various forms of smart traffic zones, new opportunities are created for the planning, control, and monitoring of traffic in a city. To fully harness this potential, city employees need an understanding of the traffic situations where smart traffic zones can be a tool and how procurement and purchasing of different components in the system are done effectively.
Existing as well as upcoming policies and regulations can also be crucial to be aware of when working with this type of technology. The results of these analyses will form the basis for creating informative documentation, providing guidelines on how cities can integrate smart traffic zones into their future urban planning.
The focus for this part of the project is therefore to:
- Define and understand the needs of a smart traffic zone for various user groups
- Mapping and providing recommendations related to policy, procurement, and purchasing
- Understand how upcoming policies, regulations, and directives at the national and international levels can impact the utilization of smart zones
- Create guidelines that assist cities in incorporating smart traffic zones into future urban planning
As a first step, a definition of what the project means by a smart urban traffic zone has been developed:
"Smart traffic zones are data-driven cost-effective solutions designed with a clear purpose to solve traffic and logistics challenges within specific geographical areas. They can be static or dynamic, permanent or temporary, with solutions that utilize data sources and technologies, such as vehicle to everything (V2X), to gather insight and guide road users and road authorities to desired sustainable actions.
The process of designing and maintaining a smart traffic zone follows an iterative approach that encompasses multiple stakeholders and adopts a systems perspective."
