Information sharing and traffic type cross-traffic management

Digitization of the freight transport system and the availability of data is a clear trend and driving factor to achieve increased transport efficiency. Through information sharing and traffic-type cross-traffic management, collaboration between actors is facilitated and creates better opportunities for situational decision-making as well as more efficient processes.

The preliminary study that has been carried out on assignment and in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration describes what has been done in the road, rail, aviation and maritime sector regarding information sharing and traffic type cross-traffic management as well as what can be done to develop the area.

To explore development opportunities, the feasibility study has highlighted, described and compared state-of-the-art projects that are at the forefront or that are distinguished by the aspect of information sharing and collaboration in order to achieve greater efficiency in the transport sector.

The preliminary study states that the different types of traffic have come a bit in making data and information available, but the conditions between the types of traffic differ even if they face similar challenges with increased connectivity. Aviation is the type of traffic that has come the longest in terms of overall traffic management thanks to the demands on increased airport efficiency and increased transport capacity in the airspace. Through information sharing and traffic type cross-traffic management between the operators operating at an airport, they have managed to reduce the time the aircraft is on the ground and created the basis for better decision-making in different scenarios. In shipping, information sharing has increased security and created environmental benefits. For passenger trains, the Swedish Transport Administration has come a long way with open APIs and made it possible for third-party service development in the form of, inter alia, the train sign.

All agencies work on projects that increase the availability of data, but there is a general improvement potential for making the data more transparent and easily accessible to open up opportunities for service developers and integration of information from the authorities.
