About the programme

The programme commenced in the spring of 2019 with four years of funding from the Swedish Transport Administration to drive development towards the implementation of geofencing, for safer and more sustainable traffic systems.

The geofencing programme is intended to act as a facilitator and knowledge node, where public and commercial stakeholders can meet to support the recommendations of the action plan and initiate necessary projects and activities for development in the field. The programme should make it possible to coordinate processes and systems, resulting in scalability and implementation at both national and international level.

A comprehensive action plan was presented in December 2018 that featured a seven-point list showing priority activities for the implementation of geofencing as a tool towards better quality assurance of the important aspects of sustainability in urban environments. One of these seven points was to establish a programme of research and innovation in which the development work drives towards a single common vision: to use a combination of technology, digital infrastructure and smart design of urban environments to promote sustainable, safe and secure densely populated environments. This programme is now operated by CLOSER.
