Short description of the pilot concept

Practically speaking, the barge will be used as a floating recycling centre where people can dispose of their combustible and noncombustible bulk waste, hazardous waste and electronics without having to drive to the existing recycling centres that are located 'inland'. The floating recycling centre will also collect items for recycling in collaboration with Emmaus.

The plan is that the floating recycling centre will dock for two days at various points along the Göta River and remain open for a few hours each day. At the end of the week the barge will travel to Marieholm, where a crane truck will take over and drive to Renova AB - Skräppekärr to unload the waste. The pilot is divided into two phases. One phase is planned for autumn 2019 and a second phase is planned for spring 2020 Each phase will be held for six and a half weeks. We will use the break between phases to make adjustments to the pilot.

Purpose and objective

The purpose of the pilot is to investigate conditions for relieving the road network and reducing car dependency through joint loading of deliveries for larger volumes of waste on the water. 

The objective is to implement a pilot with a floating recycling centre to develop proposals to facilitate processes within the city with respect to how to plan and utilise the docks in the future.

Current situation

During spring 2019, a study relating to habits of residents relating to waste management was conducted by two graduate students from the Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law. The results are important for a better understanding the norms of residents and to receive feedback relating to the project. At the same time, we have agreed with the parties who manage or own our selected berths for the project and work with the communications plan to reach residents and relevant target groups. The main criterion for the identified berths is accessibility for residents in the vicinity, primarily for pedestrians and cyclists.

The following berths will be used:

• Stenpiren

Next phase:

• A communications plan for the pilot - the challenge within this work is to get the residents to the barge without driving cars.  Various alternatives will be arranged for the residents, such as e-cargo bikes or trailers.
• All parties will sign an agreement granting access to the berths.
• The pilot will be launched on 21 September.
• Arrangement of study visit from several interested parties.
