Shared loads – an initiative that benefits many people

Friday, May 28, 2021

How can we reduce the volume of heavy goods traffic in densely populated areas where many people live and work and also create more sustainable environments without compromising on service levels and customer benefits? Lindholm Delivery is a pilot of this type of service which is part of the DenCity project.

The City of Gothenburg has ambitious climate targets and the pilot project has been part of the work towards more sustainable mobility. The effects that a concept of this kind can have are clear: a reduction in heavy goods and waste disposal traffic with traditional trucks being replaced by coordinated deliveries using electrified mini-trucks. It has also made users of the service feel safer, because the same people come each day to make deliveries to the different businesses.

One company which has extensive experience of the service, both as a property owner and as a service user, is Chalmersfastigheter.

– From our perspective, the results are positive. There are fewer large trucks in the area and the vehicles delivering the shared loads are also more sustainable. As a user of both the goods delivery and waste disposal services, we believe that they meet our needs and those of our own users very effectively. The standard of the services is also high, says Valle Cangovski, head of operations and administration.

– Chalmersfastigheter is working actively to become more sustainable in a number of different ways. We also have all our waste weighed. We've had a very positive experience in this area and the development has met our expectations, concludes Valle Cangovski.

Since the end of 2019, the service has been run by Renova Miljö which owns the shared load terminal. The site where the terminal has been built is owned by the property management company Älvstranden Utveckling, which is also a customer of the shared load services.

– We need good cooperation and functioning business models so that we can create benefits that users are prepared to pay for. One example is the Lindholm Delivery shared load concept which has reduced the volume of goods traffic in Lindholmen by around 90% and improved the quality of the service, says Louise Larsson, project leader at Älvstranden Utveckling.

– We have ordered new parcel lockers for some of our properties in Lindholmen which is another link in the chain. We need to test them and this will combine trials of both shared loads and full-service properties, says Louise Larsson.

Scaling up the service and extending the geographical area it covers have been positive developments which can genuinely benefit many people.
