In an age when shops are dying and e-commerce is on the rise, both purchasing and delivery are taking shape in new forms. Many purchase decisions are no longer made in a physical store, rather from a favourite sofa in the home. At the same time, many people expect swift and convenient home delivery - or wherever they are at the time - 'on the go'.
This means that the market for delivery of both goods and services is undergoing rapid change. Some lodestars for the market participants - e.g. goods sellers, property owners, carriers and not lastly the end customer - are mobility, flexibility and delivery cost.
In Sweden, e-commerce has increased by 15% during 2018 with a total turnover of SEK 77 billion. This highlights the need for e-commerce to satisfy buyers' demands on increased flexibility when purchasing products. The need for cargo transport is on the rise and the same applies to CO2 emissions. Fossil Free Freight Challenge 2020 is the innovation competition that will reverse this trend and help Sweden's commercial sector strive towards reduced CO2 emissions.
The hope is now that a competition will inspire all of the innovators out there to send in proposals that can reduce CO2 emissions.
By arranging the Fossil Free Freight Challenge 2020, we hop to be able to stimulate new ways of thinking and solutions that improve consumers' ability to purchase with environmentally-smart delivery.
-"By arranging Fossil Free Freight Challenge 2020, we hope to be able to stimulate new ways of thinking and solutions that improve consumers' ability to purchase with environmentally smart delivery. Our ambition with the innovation competition is to mobilise market participants in a fun and informative way to work towards contributing to increased transport effectiveness and to reduce return deliveries," says Anna Björkman, who represents CLOSER together with her colleague Anders Forsberg.
Because Fossil Free Freight Challenge 2020 is a project financed via Triple F, which is the Swedish Transport Agency's research an innovation initiative for the purpose of contributing to the Swedish freight transport system's conversion to freedom from fossils, the innovation competition is, of coursed based on the same goals as Triple F. The winning contribution will thus contribute an innovative solution to the Swedish freight transport system's conversion to freedom from fossils.
'In connection with the increase in e-commerce, we, as participants in the chain, must take greater responsibility to reduce stress on the environment. With this innovation competition, we hope to be able to find solutions that facilitate the e-commerce customer in choosing more sustainable alternatives when the need for returns and quick deliveries is decreased,' says Lina Ödeen, Sustainability Manager at H&M Global Logistics.
