— The biggest challenge is to reduce the climate impact of transport quickly enough

Thursday, December 2, 2021

December 8 is the High Capacity Transport (HCT) annual conference and we therefore asked three questions to Jonas Eliasson, Director of Transport Accessibility, the Swedish Transport Administration. In this article you can read about what Jonas thinks is biggest challenges in the freight transport area today. Jonas briefly explains what he will talk about on Wednesday. Read the whole news article and sign up for the HCT annual conference to know more about what Jonas finds important right now!

Jonas Eliasson

What challenge do you see as the biggest for the freight transport area?

– I think the biggest challenge is to reduce the climate impact of transport quickly enough. The solutions are available already or in the near future, especially now that the electrification of heavy vehicles is developing fast, but implementing large technical systems quickly is a challenge, not least because vehicles and infrastructure have a relatively long lifespan, and investments take a long time to write off.

What will your presentation be about?

– The title of my presentation is "The past and future of domestic freight transport:" Everything changes, everything stays the same "." At the same time as the transport sector faces a number of radical challenges and changes - fossil free transport, e-commerce, etc. - many trends, insights and patterns are likely to be as valid as before. The question is how to distinguish one from the other - how to distinguish the essential changes, and how to see which fundamental patterns and insights that still are valid.

The Swedish Transport Administration has just presented its proposal for a new national infrastructure plan - what do you want to highlight?

– Much of the new proposal is simply continuations of the current plan. But from an HCT perspective, it is worth mentioning that we particularly highlight the need for more resources for road maintenance, and that it would create great societal benefits if longer and heavier vehicles were made possible. We are also concerned about the rapid cost increase in many projects, and in the infrastructure sector in general.
