New pre-study about automated logistics services

Thursday, October 20, 2016

Together with partners from industry, academia and government, CLOSER has initiated a pre-study within the strategic innovation program Drive Sweden connected to automated logistics services. The aim of the project is to identify opportunities to improve transport efficiency with automated logistics services to face future challenges that freight transport is facing.

The knowledge of what type of freight that is being transported and how they move is today very insufficient, but by connecting different components within the transport system, so called Internet of Things (IoT), it would be easier to collect and analyse data which creates opportunities to improve transport efficiency and increase service levels within the system. At the same time automation of certain elements can increase delivery reliability and facilitate the management of certain parts of the systems.

By looking into different cases related to the handling of goods, collection of data and connection of goods, load carriers and vehicles, the pre-study aims to identify specific areas where efficiency could be improved by automation and also what other benefits automation can provide.

The pre-study will be carried out from October 2016 to March 2017. CLOSER will lead the project together with Region Örebro County, Gävle municipality, DHL, Transport Analysis, Chalmers University of Technology and Sweco. The project is 50% funded by the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova through Drive Sweden which is a joint venture by Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency.
