Joint loading for a higher service level in densely-populated cities

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

'If we succeed in combining the parcel boxes with joint loading at Lindholmen, the Lindholmen delivery can solve the problems of the final ten kilometres and simultaneously offer a high service level, which I believe will be a very attractive service.' Those are the words of Louise Larsson, who is responsible for joint loading within the framework of DenCity.

Joint loading within neighbouring districts is closely integrated with several other parts of the DenCity project and, together, they are the core within the urban development in DenCity. The concept includes a developed payment model and developed add-on services for an overall solution that lends itself to a higher service level for residents, visitors and those working in the city.

On 10 May, a study visit to Jönköping took place in which Södra Munksjön AB, Alwex joint loading centre and the municipality of Jönköping and the Hästkon home owner's association were visited.

The municipality demonstrated how they use joint loading for deliveries to schools, nursing homes and other facilities during the visit. The joint loading centre is operated by Alwex, which also invited the visitors in to see how they work. Finally, Södra Munksjön Utvecklings AB illustrated how DenCity's solutions and concepts can be implemented when they build new homes and quarters. The supplier Renz demonstrated their installed parcel boxes, which have been in operation for a little more than a year in the Hästkon home owner's association.

We asked Louise Larsson a few questions about the study visit.

From what you have seen today, what do you think was the most relevant for DenCity?
"It was very interesting to get to see how Jönköping's coordinated distribution of goods works in the real world and to hear how the municipality thinks and works to introduce it in the city. The joint loading terminal was also relevant, because it is important for those of us who work with concept development in DenCity to understand the physical and logistical conditions to which we must conform when we make plans so that the best possible results are achieved."

And what is most relevant for your work package?
"Since we work with an innovation procurement process of a joint loading operator at Lindholmen, it was the perfect opportunity to hear how the joint loading works in Jönköping directly from the operator's perspective. It gives us a better understanding for what it takes to make it work!"

"We have heard a great deal about parcel boxes in the Hästkon quarter that were introduced within the framework of DenCity as the project has proceeded, so it was great to get to see them in use and to see a demonstration of how the concept works in different situations. 'If we succeed in combining this with joint loading at Lindholmen, the Lindholmen delivery can solve the problems of the final ten kilometres and simultaneously offer a high service level, which I believe will be a very attractive service."

What have you taken with you today that you know can be replicated in other cities in the future?
"Ideally, all cities with introduce systems like these – it becomes clear when you hear about the effects that different solutions have had! Through DenCity, hopefully we can also show how the combinations of solutions can have an even greater effect on each of the individual solutions and that will be the key to spreading to other cities."

What is your overall impression of the day?
"It was a very exciting day with room for interesting discussions and many questions. It is fantastic to meet people who are so open and are glad to tell about and share their experiences so that we can learn from each other."
